For over 30 years I have used this orange and brown top hat I made to cover my spare roll of toilet paper in the bathroom. Well, it is still in perfect condition, but the color just does not match my bathroom any longer. So I decided to create a new one with the old cones of sewing thread we inherited from my husband’s grandfather. I used 6 threads and a 3 mm crochet hook.

Crochet Instructions

  • crochet 6 chain stitches and close to a circle with a slip stitch
  • Row 1
crochet 3 chain stitches and then 11 double crochet in the hole created from the chain stiches, connect to beginning with a slip stich
  • Row 2
crochet 3 chain stitches and then 1 double crochet into the slip stitch
now crochet 2 double stitches into each stitch of the previous row
connect to the beginning with a slip stich
  • Row 3
crochet 3 chain stitches and then 1 double crochet into the next stitch
2 double crochet into the the next stitch
1 double crochet in to the following stitch
2 double crochet into the the next stitch
repeat to the end of the row
  • Row 4
crochet 3 chain stitches and then 2 double crochet into the next 2 stitches
2 double crochet into the the next stitch
2 double crochet in to the following 2 stitches
repeat to the end of the row
  • Row 5
keep on adding one stitch between the 2 double crochet in the same stitch until the circle covers the toilet paper roll.
Note: Don’t make it too large or the hat will be too loose.
  • Row Sides
Once the circle is the correct size, stop increasing and just crochet one double crochet stitch into each stitch of the previous row.
Crochet until the hat covers the toilet paper roll
  • Rows Frilly Rim
Crochet 2 rows where you crochet 2 double crochets into each stitch of the previous row.
  • When done cut of wool, or thread and darn the ends in the crochet hat.
