The Smart Car and Children

I keep on being asked questions about the Smart car and the latest one was about children in the Smart car. Is it legal to have children under 12 in it?

I called the local dealership and a very friendly gentlemen looked it up in the Smart manual for me:

The Smart car is equipped to handle a child seat and it is ok by Transportation Canada. The passenger side seat belts are specially formulated to hold a child seat or booster seat. It is not recommended to use a rear facing children’s seat. Any child under 12 years of age or under 150cm (5 feet) has to be sitting in the proper child restraint seat. The passenger seat with a children’s seat in it has to be moved as far back as possible as the airbag can not be disabled.
